Microsoft Outlook Now Requires SPF, DKIM & DMARC: Is Your Email Setup Compliant?

As of May 5, 2025, Microsoft Outlook.com requires all email senders to have SPF, DKIM, and DMARC configured correctly. If not, your emails may get flagged, sent to spam, or not delivered at all.

What Is SPF, DKIM, and DMARC?

Break it down simply for non-technical users:

SPF (Sender Policy Framework)

Tells receiving servers which IPs are allowed to send emails on your domain’s behalf.

DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail)

Adds a digital signature to your emails so recipients know they’re really from you.

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance)

Uses SPF and DKIM to protect your domain from spoofing/phishing and lets you define actions for failed emails.

Why This Matters Now (Especially for Outlook Users)

  • Microsoft is enforcing strict email authentication policies to reduce spam and phishing.
  • Gmail and Yahoo have already made similar moves — this is not a trend; it’s the new standard.
  • Failure to comply = poor deliverability, lost customers, and blocked emails.
  • Businesses using custom domains for email (e.g., info@yourcompany.com)
  • Marketing teams using email tools like Mailchimp, Zoho Campaigns, etc.
  • Anyone sending transactional or notification emails via a third-party service
